About this deal

Puzzle books in general are a ridiculously good investment for chess improvement, and the bang-to-buck ratio is looking good here. This one seems to explain briefly some tactical themes (like Susan Polgar's book) and organises each chapter by themes.

Chess Exercises for Beginners is exactly what the title suggests: a compendium of instructive chess positions (often studies or positions from actual games) that illustrate important tactical motifs and combinations for new and lower-rated players, ranging from common checkmate patterns, double attacks, skewers, deflections, and drawing opportunities. I started the workbook as an 1100-1200 rated player (having played for about 4 months) and I found this immensely helpful. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. If you want an excellent introduction text to tactical motifs and ideas, look up Chess Tactics from Scratch — this one's just a big pile of instructive puzzles, which is totally fine.

I'm beginner player (around 1200 ELO rapid) and I found this book to be very good in learning tactics. Might be best to get a smaller, easier tactic book and this one to follow Even though i love the idea of 5334 puzzles, it might not be my first choice because of the randomness of the puzzles (and it is HUGE!In hindsight, I can see why it's a good move and can imagine the train of thought that could lead one to considering that move. I know purists (like me from 5 years ago) will say that you should set the positions up on a board and solve them, but I don't have that kind of time.
