That’s why I try to have a good work-life balance and work for six months and then take six months off and go on holiday. That’s the point of having family – so they can share the most embarrassing stories of you around the table! Known for his authentic recipes and cheeky personality, and with a string of restaurants across the country to his name, Gino has risen through the ranks to become Britain's best-loved Italian chef. Nicola said: “This show will see Gino immersed in the culture that fired his passion for cooking and invite viewers to join him as he celebrates the women who nurture and continue the traditions that make Italian food the centre of family life with all the warmth, humour and wisdom that brings. In the UK, one [of my children] is at school, one’s at work, one is away, and it’s difficult to spend uninterrupted quality time together. Starting in his place of birth, Torre Del Greco in Napoli, where he learnt to cook in the kitchens of his Nonna Flora and Mamma Alba, Gino is going back to his roots to celebrate all the women whose kitchens have fuelled Italy through their incredible food.

The six-part series sees Gino travel from Naples to Bologna, learning to cool local dishes from families and their matriarchs. From the first meatballs I rolled with my aunty Clara to the Spaghetti Vongole that I make for my own family. After training at the Luigi de Medici Catering college, Gino came to work in London and was soon discovered as a TV talent. My journey as a chef is all thanks to two generations of women, who without their passion for the food that they fed their families, I would not be where I am. It has 246 pages of recipes, family pictures of Gino and his family/ up-bring and each recipe comes with a big colorful picture.I didn’t mind the crew being in my house as I want to show viewers the simplicity of my life in Sardinia, as it’s completely different from my crazy one in the UK! Gino’s Italy: Like Mamma Used To Make is a six-part series that starts on ITV on Sunday September 4 at 7. The dessert section is a bit small and a bit too fancy for me but there are lots of nice recipes in different categories. I grow fruit and veg in my Villa and they’re the first things I eat whenever I arrive – that and spaghetti with fresh clams. But then it’s time to get busy, and Gino takes on the role of sous chef as his aunts take control of the kitchen and rustle up his favourite dish, Pasta alla Genovese. Making pizza with Nonna Flora, rolling meatballs with my aunty Clara, and stirring simmering pots of ragu in Mamma’s kitchen was wonderful. Because it’s one of the only places where my family is all together [Gino and his wife, Jessica, share three children together, sons Luciano and Rocco and daughter Mia].
