About this deal

Its very popular with boys and my son has shown more interest in this book than any other Ive ever brought home. Ann Darrow has a Marilyn Monroe appearance but I didnt find Kong scary enough, although the illustrations are very detailed. I bought this for my nine year old son, who is a big fan of the film of King Kong, and he was riveted. Anthony Browne is the acclaimed author and illustrator of such prize-winning bestsellers as Gorilla (winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal and the Kurt Maschler Award), Willy the Wizard , My Dad , Voices in the Park (winner of Kurt Maschler Award) and Zoo (winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal). King Kong is captured on a remote island and taken to New York, where he escapes and climbs the Empire State Building.

Browne's artwork is always magnificent, but I'm still scratching my head as to why he decided to devote two years of his life to this project - a tale that's been told SO many times - and then add nothing new to the story. The events on Skull Island had me feeling quite sorry for Kong as he monotonously fought off new creature after creature at each turn of the page with no sign of a reprieve.

Denham hurls a gas bomb, knocking Kong out, whereupon he exults in the opportunity to take the giant back to New York: "He's always been King of his world.

Influenced by surrealists he found his originality in creating a dreamlike world populated by gorillas – strong, massive, often deformed characters that are capable of the most unexpected, kindest feelings. The language use is accurate for the time setting and almost poetic in nature, giving a kind of ‘film noir’ edge to the story. This is a picture book for older children, which will be sure to engage the most reluctant reader and will appeal to children of approx 7+, although it is also ideal to read aloud.

Taken from the only land he ever knew and stuck into manacles in loud, brassy New York City, he becomes the hero. Near Fine, unclipped dustjacket with a small nick near the foot of the spine and minor rubbing to the extremities. He is brought to civilisation and put on show, but when he sees Ann he breaks his heavy chains and begins to wreak havoc on the streets of New York . Even when King Kong takes Beauty back into his cave, it’s portrayed as a vast cave, one which could even swallow the great Kong.

They set sail aboard the Venture, an old tramp steamer that travels for weeks in the direction of Indonesia, where Denham claims they will be shooting. The military dispatches four Curtiss Helldiver biplanes (with Lewis Guns, and Browning M1918s) to destroy Kong. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

This 1994 publication was the very first time the famous monster movie of 1933 appeared in an illustrated format, which was surprising to me.
