Considering the plot involves an examination of the department's funding (the separation of church and state in France means that no public funds can be provided for the study of religious subjects and so public universities do not have theology departments, a paradox which is brushed aside in a single paragraph which makes only limited sense) , the only way colleges can afford to maintain such courses is with the help of the Catholic Church. Plus, if you are reading Aixcentric because you like Aix, you will love all the spot-on descriptions of the town.

I assume Paulik is a commissaire, the equivalent is superintendent in UK and captain in USA - commissioner in both forces is a different kettle fish.

When Longworth debuted her charming mystery series featuring the crime-solving duo of Judge Antoine Verlaque and his on-again, off-again girlfriend, law professor Marine Bonnet, she won rave reviews. However, what I won't overlook and this annoyed me big time, is that the (laughably tiny) faculty doesn't include a single member of the clergy. I was going to say that I thought Judge Verlaque as something of a cross between George Simenon's Maigret and Colin Dexters Morse but as I am getting to know him better, I am seeing a bit of Jean-Luc Bannelec's Commissaire Dupin in the mix too. I enjoy college settings for murder mysteries and this has the added bonus of wrong doers and victims being part of the Theology Department at Universite' d'Aix.

Georges Moette, director of theology at the Université d'Aix--a very unpopular fellow with plenty of enemies.

This is the second novel in Longworth's detective series, but it is not necessary to have read the first to slip easily into the action of this one. With deftly shifting points of view, Longworth creates a beguiling read that will appeal to Louise Penny and Donna Leon fans. The two could not be any more different, but both turned out to be entirely delightful vacation reads, this one especially so. Marine heeft een kleinere rol, maar zodra zij samenwerken krijgt het onderzoek die sprankeling en de vaart die het nodig heeft, dus meer Marine in een volgend boek, graag!
