About this deal

I appreciate Sarah's collection because I definitely got to experience poetry in a different perspective. Description: Following the success of her breakout poem, "B," Sarah Kay releases her debut collection of poetry featuring work from the first decade of her career. There are a number of differences between spoken-word poetry and written poetry (that I've picked up on anyways). I highly think the connection between us is palpable, her words connect to me with too much precision.

Sarah Kay's spectacular poetry reached me so deeply that I've already passed the book on to my little sister a mere ten minutes after reading it, because I wanted to share the gift of these spectacular and empowering words with her. For a future book there may be value in considering whether playing with grammar, spacing, font and sizing changes etc. It will stick to your feelings and invigorate your inner cries a little bit (or more than a little bit), but most importantly it is an additional stunning perspective to view the world in. On the other hand, the chance to see the poems on paper provided an opportunity to dig into them in a way that listening does not quite offer and even on the poems I had listened to, I noticed components I had not before. I like how not all of her pieces stem from anger, or lust, or anguish; the emotional variety of this collection strengthens it.No Matter the Wreckage invites readers to revel in both new and beloved works, showcasing Kay's remarkable ability to celebrate the essence of family, love, travel, history, and even peculiar romances between inanimate objects ("Toothbrush to the Bicycle Tire") with eloquence and charm.

With freshness and wisdom, Kay's poetic voyage invites readers to embark on a soul-stirring journey of self-discovery and exploration of the world around her. This book is only 130 pages, so it's short to begin with, but I managed to tear through the entire book in less than 12 hours because I just kept wanting to read the next poem and read more of Kay's amazing words.

Sarah is perhaps best known for her talk at the 2011 TED conference which garnered over 3 million online views. Many of her poems centre around her experiences living in America and there are references to particular subway stations/streets etc but its so well written you could imagine being there. Reading through the poems (to myself and out loud to family members) I found that I could not quite capture all of the magic that Sarah has when she presents her poems. It took a few poems for me to get into No Matter The Wreckage and get used to the distinctive style of the poems and the poet’s voice. Sarah Kay is definitely an astonishing poet and because she is under-appreciated in the book world, I feel that more should look into giving this book a read.

Since No Matter the Wreckage includes poetry from a span of ten years of my life, it was inevitable that at some point my family would be included, since there were plenty of times in that decade when I was navigating family dynamics and history. Maybe the next time you see love is twenty years after the divorce, love is older now, but just as beautiful as you remembered.Whether or not you're a big fan of poetry, I absolutely recommend picking this book up, because I can absolutely guarantee that you will fall in love with it. If you are planning to read more poetry this reading year, I can tell you one thing for sure, Sarah Kay will not disappoint. She is perhaps best known for her talk at the 2011 TED conference, which garnered two standing ovations and has been seen over three million times online. She performs with confidence and charisma, which adds that extra bit of voice I found lacking in No Matter the Wreckage.
