About this deal

All waterproof fabrics are rated for waterproofness and anything over 10,000mm is pretty watertight in normal conditions. Breathability is also rated – look for the MVTR (Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate) figure. Above 20,000g/m²/24hr means good breathability. Fabric construction If you can’t put a price on staying warm and dry, the phenomenally expensive POC Consort MTB Dungaree could be the waterproof mountain bike solution for you. All waterproof fabrics are rated for waterproofness and breathability using standardised lab tests. The waterproof rating involves placing a piece of fabric under a vertical pipe and it with water. Then measuring the height at which the water starts to leak through the fabric. Anything over 10,000mm (10 metres) is pretty watertight in normal conditions. Reading between the lines you’ll see that Fox only states the Ranger Water pant to be water-resistant and not waterproof, but this isn’t obvious when out in downright terrible conditions, and these trousers do a stellar job of rejecting the rain and keeping you dry. Keeping those elements out is a lightweight three-layer construction that sports well-rounded waterproof, windproof and breathable traits. It’s not got the same waterproofing longevity as the Endura or Patagonia options but it’s decent enough for the majority of wet riding. We did, however, find the ratchet waist adjustment to be one of the best and most reliable systems out there.

layer main body fabric that is waterproof, windproof, and breathable. To bump up the moisture protection, these We don’t think they look quite as good as the offerings from Troy Lee Designs or Fox, but if outright performance and weatherproofing are your top priority then the MT500s are a guaranteed performer. Fox has constructed the Rangers from a relatively stretchy, light fabric. At just 270g (for the size small), the Rangers are certainly light, but the fabric doesn’t feel delicate or fragile, and it has proven to be durable throughout testing. In terms of performance, the shape, cut and fit of the Rangers most closely compares to the Specialized Trail pants.

Next level weather protection and excellent breathability, with briliant fit, comfort and durability. Manufacturers describe their garments as having three two or layers but what does this mean? A two-layer fabric is made up of an outer face fabric bonded to the waterproof membrane, usually with a mesh liner hanging inside. On a 2.5 layer, the mesh liner is replaced with a micro (or half) layer, which is either bonded or printed onto the membrane. A three-layer garment has the membrane sandwiched between two Nylon layers. Vents Of the 283 from Fox Racing, 12 were more expensive than Fox Racing Ranger 3L Water Trousers and 269 were cheaper. How much are Fox Racing Pants – Cycle? Far from the usual crinkly, tissue paper fabric found on most waterproof trousers, the Fox Ranger 3L Water is soft and supple against the skin. There’s a four-way stretch to the fabric to ensure it doesn’t restrict movement, and the fully taped seams and quality Durable Water Repellent coating keeps you cool and dry. With the Ranger 3L, Fox gives you form and function. The ankle cuffs are elasticated and the legs have a tapered fit. There’s a small amount of stretch from the 86 per cent polyester/14 per cent spandex blend in the lower leg fabric and the waist is fastened and fit adjusted using Fox’s ratchet closure system.

The Alpkit Parallax trousers deal with sweat well, the inside only getting wet on very slow climbs. Once damp (we’ll come on to waterproof performance), they were still comfortable against our skin and didn’t cause knee pads to fall down. While the waist adjustment is totally unobtrusive, it’s not as easy to use as others out there. Andy Lloyd / Our Media If you’re looking for a waterproof riding trouser that offers meaningful extra warmth, Altura’s Ridge Thermal is a really effective solution. It’s warm and dry, so you can’t argue with the functionality and it’s also really stretchy and easy to move about in.

Fox Ranger 3L Water Pant bottom line

While there’s no denying that the Rangers are great on the bike, they’re not perfect for a number of reasons. Ideally, you’ll want a snug but non-restrictive fit: too loose and you could risk the trousers sagging; too tight and they’ll be uncomfortable or restrictive. Look out for elastane blend materials to help give extra stretch, and make sure there’s plenty of room for you to wear knee pads underneath too.

You should always keep proof of postage and we advise you to use a ‘signed for service’ when returning goods. You might not be able to tell from the pictures but the Fox Ranger 3L Water Pant doesn’t have that typical nylon trouser construction, it’s more of a soft shell. The face fabric contains a high percentage of Spandex, which means it has a four-way stretch ability, is less noisy and, in our opinion, way more comfortable. So the first aspect of price that we’re going to look at is the price of Fox Racing Ranger 3L Water Trousers. The first striking thing you’re likely to notice with the Rangers is their heavily tapered, figure-hugging cut. This isn’t to ensure you’re as aero as possible while sauntering down the trail, but simply adds an element of practicality on the bike – baggy trousers are likely to flap about as you pedal, especially when caked in mud, which is very annoying. The ratchet strap did provide reliable and secure waist adjustment, though. Ian Linton / Immediate Media Choosing performance bike outerwear can be confusing and full of jargon, which is why Fox organises its outerwear range into clear and understandable categories, using three overarching category names: Water, Fire and Wind. Even without explaining any further, it’s easy to work out what each category focuses on. Water is for rainy and wet weather. Fire is for cold temperatures. Wind is for, yep… you guessed it, windy conditions.
